How to prepare solar panels for winter

Installing solar panels on the roof of the house is an effective way to save the electricity bill and reduce the carbon footprint. But in the winter months, solar panels will require special care during this period in order to keep your solar installation running smoothly.

        1. Adjust the angle of your panels

The angle of the sun during winter is different from that of summer. Because of this, you will need to adjust the tilt of your solar panels to get the most out of them during the winter. Because the sun is lower in winter than in summer.

        2. Reduce your energy use (or be prepared to pay more for electricity)

Solar panels can still capture sunlight and create energy to meet a home's energy need during the winter. But since there are fewer daylight hours, energy production will be low, you may need to reduce your energy use or prepare to pay a higher electricity bill. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to reduce your energy consumption, including:

  • Switch to energy efficient light bulbs. They last longer and work better. Typically, a traditional 60-watt bulb can be replaced with an energy-efficient 15-watt bulb.
  • Turn off lights and appliances that you are not using.
  • Unplug small appliances that you are not using.
  • Lower your thermostat. You can save money by lowering the temperature in your home a few degrees. Wear layered clothing to make yourself more comfortable.
  • Check your home's insulation. If your home is poorly insulated, more heat will escape, costing you money.
